Versaperm Vapour Permeability measurement

Electronics and water - Boom or bust

Electronics and water - Boom or bust

Electronics and water should not mix as they can literally lead to boom or bust! The two things shouldn’t mix – but there is a problem. Even when coatings, encapsulations and packaging are excellent at keeping liquid out they are often virtually useless when it comes to keeping water vapour out.  As a gas water vapour can permeate through any material.  Once moisture permeates in, it condenses into a liquid and can’t get out again!

Fortunately, Versaperm can measure vapour permeability not just for materials and coatings samples but also for finished components, subsystems or enclosures.  It can optionally measure any other vapour* used in the electronics industry including carbon dioxide, solvents, oxygen or hydrocarbons.

Typically, results are accurate in the Parts Per Million (PPM) to Parts Per Billion (PPB) range and the equipment can measure multiple products, components and materials at a time.  It can control and cycle environmental conditions including temperature pressure, partial pressure and humidity.

Measuring assembled electronics systems is especially important because processes, such as thermoforming, extruding, moulding, heating, sealing or pressure can all dramatically change a barrier’s ability to keep water vapour out.

Versaperm also offers a laboratory service for companies that only need to test samples on an irregular basis.
